• LETTERS: The Mexican government will stop sending loan approval letters signed by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, after the national elections institute (INE) ruled they were a violation of the Mexican Constitution in the middle of the coronavirus emergency.
• VIOLATION: “The INE issued a precautionary measure…to stop the delivery and dissemination of letters because this violates Article 134 of the Constitution that prohibits the personalized promotion of public servants”, the Mexican national elections institute said.
• COMPLAINT: Earlier this week, opposition parties presented a complaint before the INE about the distribution of letters by Mexico’s Social Security Institute (IMSS). The microloans program is aimed at reaching at least 1 million small businesses with US $1,000 worth relief checks.
• COLLISION: “They did not like that I put my name (in the loan approval letters). They said that I was doing political advertising. So, we decided to remove my name. I will not argue with them, rest assured”, President López Obrador said on Friday.
