• INSUFFICIENT: More than half of Mexicans, 53%, believe that the economic measures taken by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador to deal with the coronavirus crisis are insufficient, according to a new national poll released by Mexico City’s newspaper Reforma.

• EMERGENCY: While half of Mexicans also disapprove of the economic measures for disadvantaged families and small entrepreneurs, the percentage of Mexicans approving López Obrador’s handling of the overall health emergency grew from 43% in early April to 50% now.

• SOLIDARITY: “This phenomenon has been seen in other countries and is due to the solidarity expressed by the population around their leader in the presence of an external threat”, said Lorena Becerra, polling director for Reforma newspaper, about the rise in approval regarding the response.

• BANKRUPTCY: With Mexico’s GDP potentially contracting up to 10% in 2020, the survey found that 24% of Mexicans know of a business that has gone bankrupt due to the coronavirus closures. Reforma’s poll was conducted via phone among 400 adults between April 22-24.
