• EMPTY: Mexico’s immigration detention centers are virtually empty after authorities deported 97% of those migrants detained in March, as a way to comply with government directives to contain the coronavirus pandemic, according to Mexico’s Migration Institute (INM).
• CAPACITY: The INM reported Sunday that the number of migrants held in detention was 106 after having deported 3,653 individuals to Guatemala, El Salvador, and Honduras, despite the closures of international borders. Total capacity among all Mexico’s 65 detention centers is 8,524.
• COMPLIANCE: “Based on the health recommendations of Mexican authorities and national and international organizations…the Institute implemented the departure of some migrants housed in migratory stations and provisional shelters”, the INM said in a press release.
• JUDGE: On April 17, a Mexican federal judge ordered the government to release from detention migrants from most at-risk populations from contracting coronavirus, including those older than 60 and pregnant women. Yesterday, the INM did not make any reference to the judge’s order.
