• MARKET: Health authorities have detected a major coronavirus outbreak at Mexico City’s giant wholesale market (known in Spanish as Central de Abasto) with at least 20 confirmed cases and 2 deaths directly linked to it. Authorities will deploy 400 medical personnel and limit access.
• NUMBERS: As of late Sunday, Mexico has officially reported 14,677 coronavirus cases and 1,351 deaths. Mexico City accounts for approximately a 27% share of the total confirmed cases. The neighboring state, State of Mexico, is number two in total confirmed cases, with a 16% share.
• SITE: “Today, the entire (Central de Abasto) is already marked as a high contagion site”, said Héctor García, the market’s general manager. “Unfortunately, Central de Abasto, the supply channel to the city and a section of the country, cant stop. We must continue”.
• SUPPLY: Covering 808 acres, Central de Abasto is considered the world’s largest market by the World Union of Wholesale Markets (WUWM). According local merchants interviewed by Reforma newspaper, initial sanitary measures were not tough enough.
