• PREPONDERANCE: Five years after being declared a dominant agent, Grupo Televisa has lost ground as the dominant agent in Mexico’s open TV market, due in part to the entry of new players, according to a new study by the Mexican telecom regulator (IFT).
• NUMBERS: Per IFT’s estimates, Grupo Televisa had a 57.7% share of Mexico’s open TV market in 2019 compared to the 66.7% share it had in 2014. Experts believe that the decades-long dominant Mexican broadcaster could soon go below the 50% market share.
• EXPERT: “Televisa has more competition in all respects, there’s a (new) third network, regional broadcasters, and small TV stations. It is very likely that in two or three years, if Imagen TV and TV Azteca do a good job, Televisa goes below 50%”, said Jorge Bravo, head of the watchdog group AMEDI.
• HISTORY: After being declared a dominant agent in 2014, Grupo Televisa was forced to accept measures to rebalance the market. Including making infrastructure available to third parties and a ban on offering certain marquee events (notably the soccer World Cup) on an exclusive basis.
