• PEAK: Mexico will see the peak in the coronavirus pandemic sometime between May 8 and May 10, according to the latest government projections. Despite Mexico formally having entered the most severe phase of the pandemic, this week numerous people across the country were still in the streets.

• NUMBERS: As of late Wednesday, Mexico has officially reported 10,544 coronavirus cases and 970 deaths. Mexico City accounts for around 26% share of the total confirmed cases. The neighboring state, State of Mexico, is number two in total confirmed cases, with a 15% share.

• DISREGARD: With people in several Mexican municipalities disregarding the national lockdown, authorities are worried that severe outbreaks could spark in places in the vicinity of Mexico City, including the municipalities of Ecatepec, Nezahualcóyotl and Tultitlán in the State of Mexico.

• MARKETS: “We’re not worried about the large stores. Rather than that is the large number of small businesses who are not suspending their activities,  in many regions we have a large number of street markets”, said Luis Felipe Puente, the State of Mexico’s Public Safety Minister.
