• RESTRICTIONS: Mexico and the US have extended travel restrictions on non-essential travel across their common border until at least May 19, as a measure to contain the spread of coronavirus, according to both governments. Border restrictions do not ban cross-border trade.
• US SIDE: Since March 21, border restrictions to non-essential travel have deeply affected tourism and shopping trips to both sides of the border. The US allows American citizens and residents to enter from Mexico with no hassle; students and temporary workers are also still welcome.
• CRITICAL: “As President Trump stated last week, border control, travel restrictions and other limitations remain critical to slowing the spread and allowing the phased opening of the country”, said acting Homeland Security secretary Chad Wolf on Monday.
• MEXICAN SIDE: Despite a government call to prevent non-essential crossings, Mexico has no thorough migration control at its ports of entry. Other than a few health inspection stations at specific ports of entry, US citizens can easily cross into Mexico.
