• ANXIETY: Despite assurances from Mexico’s president, the Mexican auto supply sector remains anxious over a potential gap once the US auto industry restarts operations in the coming weeks, given that the Mexican economy could remain closed during a longer period of time.
• PRESIDENT: Earlier this month, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said he had agreed for Mexico’s auto part industry to resume operations once automotive assembly plants in the US restart production. However, his administration said yesterday the Mexican economy will reopen on June 1.
• ESSENTIAL: “We are asking for coordination in the North American region regarding the declaration of the automotive sector as an essential activity and all (supply) chains”, said Guillermo Rosales, deputy general manager of Mexico’s auto distributors association (AMDA).
• NUMBERS: In 2019, the total value of Mexico auto sector exports to the US (including automobiles, trucks and auto parts) amounted to USD 136.7 billion, according to the US Department of Commerce. This figure puts Mexico way ahead of other countries such as Canada, Japan, and Germany.
