• DRAFT: Mexico’s Health Council will hold a vote over a draft triage guide on how to prioritize limited healthcare resources amid the coronavirus pandemic. The draft proposal would prioritize medical service to the young before the elderly and chronic disease patients.
• NUMBERS: As of late Thursday, Mexico has officially reported 6,297 coronavirus cases and 486 deaths. Mexico City accounts for a 29% share of the total confirmed cases. The neighboring state, State of Mexico is number two in total confirmed cases, with an 11% share.
• LIMITS: “Resources will always be limited. We have seen this in all the countries that are suffering or have suffered from this pandemic. So, not foreseeing these circumstances would mean ethically failing patients”, said José Ignacio Santos Preciado, secretary of Mexico’s Health Council.
• VOTE: The draft triage guide aims at establishing fair and objective criteria for healthcare workers to act upon when resources are at capacity. Formed by representatives of sectors of Mexican society, including academia, government and industry, the Health Council has yet to vote on the proposal.
