Coronavirus: Mexico records highest number of deaths in a day

• DAY: Mexican health authorities reported Tuesday 76 new coronavirus deaths marking the highest number of coronavirus deaths in a day. Also, the number of coronavirus patients requiring hospitalization reached a new high (34%), a sign that contagion is accelerating.

• NUMBERS: As of late Tuesday, Mexico has officially reported 5,399 coronavirus cases and 406 deaths. Mexico City accounts for 28% share of the total confirmed cases. The neighboring state of State of Mexico is second place in number of total confirmed cases with an 11% share.

• MEASURES: “The best way we can help is by reducing contagion, decreasing transmission. We are still on time. We can still tighten social distancing”, said Victor Hugo Borja, a federal government health official at the daily press briefings dealing with the pandemic.

• STATES: The states with the highest rate of mortality linked to coronavirus include the Caribbean state of Quintana Roo, the northwestern state of Sinaloa and also Mexico City. Health authorities also said that increased used of public hospitals has been reported across the country.
