• BONUS: The Mexican government approved to pay of 20% bonus above the regular monthly salary to health workers dealing with coronavirus cases at public hospitals affiliated to IMSS, the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS), which covers workers in the formal economy.
• NUMBERS: As of late Monday, Mexico has officially reported 5,014 coronavirus cases and 332 deaths. Mexico City accounts for 28% share of the total confirmed cases. The neighboring state of State of Mexico is second place in number of total confirmed cases with an 11% share.
• RISKS: “These are considered occupational-related risks. We recognize (Mexican) health workers. But we want the entire population to recognize them” said Víctor Hugo Borja, an official at IMSS. Some 29 IMSS hospitals are devoted solely to coronavirus and 155 to all types of illnesses.
• INFECTED: According to the Mexican government, a total of 535 IMSS health workers have been infected with coronavirus. The number of infected health workers is particularly worrisome at hospitals in the states of Baja California Sur, Coahuila, Baja California Norte and State of Mexico.
