• SITES: Authorities in the western state of Jalisco have found at least 21 torture and illegal burial sites linked to criminal activity in the Guadalajara metro area (pop. 6 million) since 2019, according to government data gathered by Mural newspaper. Guadalajara is Mexico’s second largest city.

• TORTURE: Popularly known as “horror homes”, the discovery of torture sites in residential areas across Guadalajara spiked since 2019. Local authorities have linked these sites to fights between drug dealing groups vying for territorial control of certain areas of the city.

• ZAPOPAN: The most recent discovery of a so-called “safe house” happened Friday when local officers in the Zapopan municipality (part of the Guadalajara area) found five dead bodies at a home in the La Estancia residential area with their hands tied and marks on their neck.

• DISAPPEARED: According to a 2019 report by CMDPDJ (a renowned Mexican human rights non-governmental organization), Jalisco was the second Mexican state with the greatest amount of mass graves reported between 2009 and 2014 with a total of 53.
