• RESTART: Mexico’s auto parts industries will be authorized to restart operations once automakers in the US are able to reopen plants after the coronavirus emergency, said Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. This as a way not to stop decades-old supply chains.

• ESSENTIAL: Despite auto parts exports to the US valued at at USD 57 billion, auto parts industries had not been deemed essential under last week’s Mexico’s health emergency declaration. This would have represented a risk for US auto makers once they decided to reopen their plant.

• GRANTED: “The automotive branch in the US has stopped…But they are going to reopen. This is an economic branch that generates one million jobs in Mexico. Whenever they reopen in the US, they must have inputs produced in Mexico”, said López Obrador Wednesday.

• POWERHOUSE: Mexico is the world’s fifth largest auto parts producer. According to industry figures, the auto parts sector is composed by more than 1,500 companies. The Mexican states with the largest auto parts capacity are Coahuila, Chihuahua, Guanajuato and Nuevo León.
