• WAVE: Despite a health emergency stemming from the coronavirus outbreak,, the western state of Jalisco is witnessing a spike in violence with at least 13 homicides in less than 24 hours only in its capital city of Guadalajara. The city’s metro area is home to 5 million people.

• APRIL: According to data gathered by Mural newspaper, murders in Jalisco have reached at least 55 only in April. While waiting for official Mexican Government data, the number of homicides in Jalisco between January and March reached 539 according a Mural’s tally.

• RELENTLESS: “For no reason (crime groups) would lower the intensity even in these conditions, what interests them is to lacerate the enemy, achieve control of territories”, Alfonso Partida, an expert at the University of Guadajalara (UdeG), told Mural newspaper earlier this month.

• PREVIOUS: In 2019, the state of Jalisco recorded a total of 2,672 homicides, according to Mexico’s Public Security System (SESNP) making it number four among all Mexican states just behind Guanajuato, Baja California and State of Mexico.
