• GREATER: The Mexican government disclosed Wednesday that the actual total number of coronavirus cases in the country is 8 times greater than the current reported figure. Based on Mexico’s Health Department’s estimates the real number would be 26,519.

• METHODS: “The epidemic is eight times bigger. This does not modifies any (Government) decision”, said Hugo López-Gatell, Mexico’s undersecretary of health. “For the 3,000 cases we currently have detected, there are others that did not made it to (a doctor’s) appointment”.

• RECORD: As of late Wednesday, Mexico has officially reported 3,181 coronavirus cases and 174 deaths. Mexico City accounts for 26% share of the total confirmed cases. The neighboring state of State of Mexico is second place in number of total confirmed cases with an 11% share.

• CONTROVERSIAL: Used to track influenza outbreaks, Mexico decided to apply an epidemic surveillance model known as “Sentinel” which gathers data from 375 health districts to extrapolate for the rest of country; until Wednesday, Mexico had not disclosed the multiplication factor.
