• LOSS: The López Obrador administration presented a grim picture of the coronavirus shock on the Mexican economy showing a loss of 346,000 jobs only in the past three weeks. The number is larger than the total 342,000 jobs gained during the entire year of 2019.

• UNFAZED: Despite the new numbers, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador remained unfazed saying that the Mexican economy will gain 2 million new jobs between May and December of this year. Most analysts expect a large contraction of the economy of up to 8% of GDP this year.

• WARNING: “We do not want the misbehavior of some (the firing of workers from their jobs) to be seconded by others. We are in time to make a respectful call for those who are doing this to rectify”, said López Obrador saying without prove its mostly the fault of large and medium businesses.

• DAMAGE: The leading Mexican state in jobs lost during the past three weeks is tourism-dependent Quintana Roo (63,000) due to the unraveling of the global travel industry. Other states with major job losses are Mexico City (55,000), Nuevo León (23,000) and Jalisco (21,000).
