Coronavirus: Local authorities across Mexico enforce lockdown

• RESPONSE: Local authorities across Mexico are turning to a wide range of methods to enforce the closure of non-essential activities to prevent the spread of coronavirus including the use of public force in the central city of Irapuato an speaker-drones in Caribbean resorts.

• NUMBERS: As of late Thursday, Mexico’s Ministry of Health reported 1,510 confirmed coronavirus cases and a total of 50 confirmed deaths. Mexico City accounts for 21% share of confirmed cases. In second place is neighboring Estado de México with 11% share.

• DRONES: “We are facing a health alert” Stay at home! We are facing a global pandemic. I repeat, stay at home!”, says a recording installed in four speaker-drones deployed by the Quintana Roo state government over the beaches of Cancún and Playa del Carmen.

• MASKS: At least three of Mexico’s 2,457 municipalities have ordered the mandatory wearing of face masks while in public spaces: Nuevo Laredo in the US border state of Tamaulipas along with the cities of Orizaba and Xalapa in the Gulf coast state of Veracruz.
