• RISK: Some 21 million Mexicans are at risk of falling into poverty as a result of the economic impact of the coronavirus pandemic if there are no enough measures to limit its impact including for 4 million small and medium firms, according to CEEY, a Mexico City-based think tank

• NUMBERS: Warning of the effects of the coronavirus crisis, CEEY is recommending aggressive measures to prevent a historic collapse. Mexico’s current income-poverty rate is 48.8% of the population, according to social development agency CONEVAL. This 61 million Mexicans.

• LEGACY: “As for income poverty, the clock of history would go back almost a quarter of a century. The legacy, not only of the crisis, but of those who make decisions, would be a Mexico in social ruin”, said the CEEY in a document signed by 104 experts in different fields.

• WAIT: Unlike other countries around the world, the Mexican government has yet to announce a fiscal stimulus package and has presented limited measures for loans for the equivalent of US $1 billion in total. It is expected that the government will make an announcement by Sunday April 5.
