Daimler shuts down truck, bus plants in Mexico

• SHUTDOWN: German multinational Daimler is shutting down its two truck plants and one bus plant in Mexico due to the turmoil derived from the global coronavirus outbreak joining most vehicle makers in the country in temporarily suspending operations.

• PLANTS: Daimler said its truck plant in Saltillo (Northern Mexico) will close on March 27 and its truck plant in Santiago Tianguistenco (Central Mexico) on April 3. They will reopen on April 14. Its Mercedes-Benz Bus plant in García (Northern Mexico) will close between March 30 and April 22.

• HEALTH: “These measures are intended to avoid the possibility of Covid-19 (coronavirus) contagion and to safeguard the health and integrity of our associates and business partners (in Mexico)”, said Daimler AG in a statement on Wednesday.

• MAZDA: On Wednesday, Japanese automaker Mazda said its plant in Salamanca (Central Mexico) will suspend operations for 10 days citing an upheaval in car demand and also in its supply chain. Mazda joined Ford, Fiat Chrysler, Honda, Audi, GM, Toyota in altering its operations in Mexico.
