• REQUEST: The Mexican government has formally requested Spanish authorities the extradition of Emilio Lozoya, the former head of Mexico’s state-owned oil company (Pemex), who is being accused in Mexico for money laundering, bribery and criminal conspiracy.
• CHARGES: According to the formal request presented Tuesday, the Mexican Attorney General’s office (FGR) is charging Lozoya for using illegal funds to purchase a US 1.5 million residence and receiving bribes from Brazilian construction giant Odebrecht, among other things.
• CONFIDENCE: “I’m sure it is going to go ahead..like other (criminal) processes that we are following. There is no impunity…There is no influence peddling”, said Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, when asked whether he was confident that Spain will grant the request
• JAIL: After months on the loose, Lozoya was arrested in February at the southern Spanish city of Málaga where he had been hiding at a high-end compound. Early in March Lozoya was transferred Madrid jail where he is awaiting his extradition process to move forward.
