• OUTLOOK: The current coronavirus outbreak is expected to increase the online sales of groceries and other products across Mexico, given that consumers will try to avoid crowding at supermarkets to prevent transmission, according to the online sales industry.

• PACE: One of the world’s dynamic e-commerce markets, Mexico has yet to implement restrictions for people not to leave home due to the coronavirus outbreak. Meanwhile, the e-commerce industry sees an opportunity to expand online sales among Mexicans beyond electronics and high-end retail.

• TRANSFORMATION: “The issue of food and groceries (online sales) will transform Mexico in the upcoming weeks, as has been seen with other countries who have faced the pandemic”, says Pierre Blaise, head of Mexico’s Association for Online Sales (AMVO).

• MARKET: Last year, the Mexican online market was the fastest-growing around the world, with sales expected growing between 35% and 38%, according to market research company eMarketer. It remains to be seen how much the current economic turmoil will affect consumption.
