• ATTACK: Five people were killed and 21 others were wounded after a group of gunmen opened fire in a bar, located in the industrial city of Salamanca (pop. 233,000) in the central state of Guanajuato, which has experienced a wave of criminal violence since at least 2018.

• AREA: After arriving aboard two pick-up trucks, a group of unknown gunmen opened fire against patrons of the La Típica bar in Salamanca, according to local reports. The bar is less than 10 minutes from a state-owned Pemex oil refinery and a Mazda’s vehicle assembly plant.

• REQUEST: “Without the help of senior state and federal officials responsible for security, we will not be able to obtain (tranquility). Not one more death in Salamanca. We need support from those who swore to defend us. And we need it now”, said Mayor María Beatriz Hernández.

• ADVISORY: Last Friday, the US Department of State issued a travel advisory for officials not to travel to the industrial corridor in southern Guanajuato, which includes Salamanca and other relatively wealthy cities of Celaya (pop.468,000) and Irapuato (pop. 342,000), where violence has spiked.
