• PROTEST: Women in Mexico staged a nationwide protest Monday, by staying off the streets in cities like Veracruz on the Gulf Coast of Mexico, and absenting from work in downtown stores in Monterrey, as a way to protest gender violence and economic inequality.
• INCOME: “For some of us, it’s difficult to stop doing our activities. We’ve had to come to work because we need the income. But we support it”, said a woman employee at the Basico Hotel in tVeracruz, who could not join in skipping work for the day.
• ACTIVITIES: Labeled as “A Day Without Us”, Monday’s strike followed a previous day of massive women’s demonstrations across Mexico. Some employers like Walmart let women take the day off and business chamber CONCAMIN, estimated women’s absence reached 60%.
• IMPACT: “Only in the commercial sector, the economic impact…will be greater than USD 1.4 billion, 15% more than we estimated. Since many businesses did not operate due to lack of personnel”, said José Manuel Campos, head of Mexico’s commercial and tourism chamber (CONCANACO).
