• THOUSANDS: Thousands women filled the streets of at least 61 cities all across Mexico in marches demanding a stop to gender violence. Sunday’s protest will be followed with a nationwide strike on Monday called by women’s groups.
• MARCH: With at least 80,000, the Sunday protest in downtown Mexico City was mostly peaceful with some violent incidents near the Presidential palace. Among the slogans: “We are all one”, “Fear has already changed sides” and “We are not hysterical. Together we are historical”.
• DAUGHTER: “She was my granddaughter, but I feel like a daughter was taken from me. All we want is justice for our murdered women”, said Feliza Hernández, from the Vallejo neighborhood in Mexico City. Many of the protestors wore purple in occasion of International Women’s Day.
• FEMICIDES: Since 2010, 1,117 women have been victims of femicide according to Mapa Nacional de Feminicidios, a citizen-kept registry. Femicide is a criminal offense in Mexico where a woman is killed by her own gender. This, in addition to thousands of women victims of criminal violence.
