• READY: The consortium of companies led by Texas-based Talos Energy, stated this week that it is ready to develop the Zama oilfield in the Gulf of Mexico, once unitization negotiations with Mexico’s state-owned oil company Pemex conclude, insisting to remain as the lead operator.
• TALKS: With talks expected to end later this year, the development of Zama -a find estimated in over 1 billion barrels of oil-, turned complicated after Pemex disclosed in January they were seeking operational control of the field, which extends to a neighboring block they own.
• EXPECTATION: “We expect to be the operator. We are (currently) the operator of Block 7, and we continue developing our plans so that we can reach an agreement”, said Tim Duncan, CEO of Talos Energy, who insisted they continue to share information with Pemex.
• DELAY: While Talos already drilled exploratory wells and presented a third-party estimate arguing that 60% the Zama reservoir is in its block, Pemex has yet to start drilling an exploratory well on its neighboring block, despite having presented a plan to do so on February 14th.
