• PIRACY: The fight against piracy of digital and physical products in Mexico is hurting from the defunding of the Attorney General’s unit (FGR) in charge of pursuing enforcement actions, according to sources in the private sector. Among the most pirated goods are music and movies.

• INACTION: “They (the Government) is not conducting any type of operation anywhere where piracy is known to be distributed,” said a Mexican lawyer who asked not to be named. According to the source, the Attorney General’s Office (FGR) is asking the private sector to pursue investigations on their own.

• GROUP: Earlier this month, the US private sector’s International Intellectual Property Alliance (IIPA) recommended in a report, for the FGR’s specialized unit, in charge of fighting crimes against industrial property and copyright (UEDDAPI), to increase resources and training against digital piracy.

• COST: Figures by CANACINTRA, one of the main Mexican private sector umbrella organizations, show that piracy and contraband cost the country a minimum of USD 2.2 billion. The main pirated-goods include movies, technology, and TV streaming.
