• VIOLENCE: At least 19 women in the Pacific Coast state of Guerrero (pop. 3.5 million) have been murdered this year because of their gender according to local human rights group Tlachinollan that has documented the growing wave of violent offenses known as femicides.

• NUMBERS: The reported trend in Guerrero is alarming, given that the total number of complaints about femicides recorded in 2019 was 16, according to data from Mexico’s public security system. This, while Mexico confronts a wave of outrage over authorities’ preventive actions.

• CASES: Yesterday, a waitress in Ciudad Altamirano in Guerrero was found dead in her apartment with signs of beatings. Also in Guerrero, a woman was strangled to death earlier this week by her partner, in Acapulco and a 17-year-old girl was shot to death in Coyuca de Benítez.

• STRIKE: Trying to call attention to the problem of gender violence across Mexico, feminist groups are calling for a national day of strike on March 9, asking women not to work, not use public transportation among other things. International Women’s Day is celebrated on March 8 every year.
