• OUTRAGE: The murder of a 7-year old girl in Mexico City provoked outrage in the southeast borough of Xochimilco on Sunday with neighbors tolling the bells of a local church, demanding the city’s mayor to show up and calling for street blockades on Monday.
• INVESTIGATION: According to police sources, the body of the girl was dumped inside black plastic bags in a neighboring borough and had already been identified by her family. A man who self-identified on Twitter as uncle of the girl said she was found naked and tortured.
• ALERT: Last week, Mexico City’s Attorney General’s Office activated an amber alert seeking help to locate a 7-year old girl who was last seen in the streets of the Xochimilco borough wearing her elementary school’s uniform and accompanied by a man on February 11.
• FEMICIDE: Mexico City is experiencing a series of protests by feminists groups that demand solutions to growing violence against women. In 2019, 68 women were murdered because of their gender (a criminal offense known as femicide) in Mexico City. In 2018, there were 43 femicides.
