• BAJÍO: The larger Bajío region in Central Mexico has strengthened its position as a key location for auto parts production reaching 31.2% of the country’s total production in 2019, according to Mexico’s auto parts industry association (INA). This is a notable increase from the 20% recorded in 2015.
• MAGNET: Given its access to the Pacific Coast port of Manzanillo, the Gulf Coast’s port of Veracruz and the US border, the states comprising the larger Bajío (Guanajuato, Querétaro, San Luis Potosí, Aguascalientes and Jalisco) are increasing their relevance for the auto parts sector.
• STRATEGIC: “The Bajío is near the port of Manzanillo from where make the import of the components. The manufacturing is done then and sent to the US or Manzanillo, to export to to Asia or sent to (port of) Veracruz to be sent to Europe”, said Alberto Bustamante, an official at INA
• EXPORTS: The value of total Mexican auto parts exports was USD 79.3 billion in 2018 of which almost 90% had the US as its final destination, per INA data. Mexico is the fifth-largest auto part producer in the world with more than 2,500 companies in the sector, according to US estimates.
