• LONG DAYS: More than 10.3 million Mexicans work more than 48 hours a week going beyond the legally mandated 8-hour workdays, according to data from Mexico’s statistics agency (INEGI). Of this number, 5.1 million Mexicans work more than 11 hours per day.
• HOURS: According to data from the Organization for Economic Development and Cooperation (OECD), Mexico surpasses the 36 member countries of the OECD, with the highest number of average annual hours per worker (2,148) while Germany has the lowest (1,363)
• CULTURE: “There is this concept of people believing that ‘If my coworkers think I work more, they will think I’m better’. Meanwhile, the concept of efficiency is to do what I have to do only once and as quickly as possible”, says Martin Borjas, head of workplace solutions firm Citrix in Mexico.
• LABOR FORCE: According to INEGI’s numbers, Mexico’s labor force encompasses 57.3 million. However, a majority of Mexican workers (56%) work in informal employment, which includes the large informal economy but also informal employment in the private/public sectors.
