Super Bowl: Avocado producers estimate record exports

• BOWL: Mexican avocado producers are reporting record levels of exports of avocados to the US, before the National Football League’s (NFL) Super Bowl, one of the key dates for high avocado consumption among Americans along with the Cinco de Mayo celebration later in the year.

• TONNES: According to estimates by Mexico’s Avocado Producers and Exporters Association (APEAM), avocado exports to the US during the first four weeks of 2020 it is expected to reach more than 127,000 tonnes way ahead of the 121,900 tonnes recorded in 2019.

• YEAR: With the US as the main importer of avocados in the world, and Mexico’s production based in Michoacán state, total exports of avocados to the US in the 2018/2019 totaled 888,000 tonnes, and the expectation is that the 2019/2020 year will surpass one million tonnes.

• IMPOSSIBLE: “(Avocado producers are working to improve environmental conditions (healthier soils and access to water) to obtain better yields and increased production since demand in the United States is nearly impossible to satisfy”, US Department of Agriculture in December.
