• CONTROL: Mexico’s state-owned oil company Pemex has openly admitted it seeks operational control over the Zama oilfield, one of the world’s most prolific shallow water projects. Pemex shares Zama with a consortium led by Texas-based Talos Energy that made the find in 2017.
• LARGEST: “Pemex also wants to be the operator (of Zama) because it’s an important field…We consider that the largest part of the reservoir is on our side”, Octavio Romero, Pemex CEO, said on Wednesday. Earlier this month, Talos Energy pushed to close unitization negotiations over Zama.
• PROJECTIONS: While Talos Energy already drilled exploratory wells and presented a third-party estimate arguing that 60% -of the over 1 billion of barrels of oil find- is in its block (while 40% is in the adjacent Pemex block), the state-owned company has yet to start drilling.
• DRILL: “When will this be verified? When Pemex drills a well on its allocated side. Meanwhile, (Talos Energy) has already evaluated its side and has already assessed its share”, said Alma América Porres Luna, commissioner at National Hydrocarbons Commission (CNH).
