• MURDER: Former Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Narciso Elvira, 53, and his son, 20, were killed in Mexico’s Gulf coast state of Veracruz after armed men in vehicles allegedly shot at them in what local outlets are describing as a kidnapping attempt.
• VERACRUZ: Having been a victim of a kidnapping for ransom back in 2015, Elvira retired from baseball to live in a small town one hour south from the Veracruz City port. Despite several incidents of violent crime, the US Department of State has no restrictions on travel to Veracruz.
• OPERATION: “We regret the cowardly murder of former baseball player, Narciso Elvira and his son…In coordination with federal forces and the State Attorney General office, we have deployed a search operation to find the attackers”, said the Veracruz Ministry of Public Security.
• CAREER: Acquired by the Milwaukee Brewers in 1986, Elvira made his big-league debut in 1990. He later played for the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Texas Rangers, and Japan’s Osaka Kintetsu Buffaloes. In Mexico, he played for several teams, including Petroleros de Minatitlán.
