• COURTS: Mexico’s National Agriculture Council (CNA), said Monday, it will go to court to appeal the new government regulation mandating front-of-package nutrition labeling on processed foods and beverages, arguing it will have negative effects for the entire food supply chain.
• AGAINST: “The public sector intends to hit processed and ultra-processed foods. The entire food supply chain is going to be hit… and it will affect agriculture as well. Authorities want everyone to eat fresh food, but fresh food is perishable”, said Bosco de la Vega, head of CNA.
• OBESITY: Aimed at stopping Mexico’s alarming obesity crisis last year, Mexico’s Congress passed legal changes, mandating front-of-package nutrition labeling on foods high in sugar, sodium, saturated fat and, calories. On Friday, the Federal Government gave its green light.
• DIALOGUE: “We must continue discussing this topic. Not to impose ourselves but to seek an agreement”, said President Andrés Manuel López Obrador on Monday, opening the door to some conciliation. Last week, the US Government also disputed Mexico’s new food labeling regulation.
