• PROJECT: The new Baja California government has decided to move forward with negotiations to build a new international airport between the coastal town of Ensenada and the Valle de Guadalupe wine region, which would serve both civilian and military purposes.
• TALKS: Known for its growing tourism area, just 78 miles south of the US border, talks to develop the new plan involve negotiations with Mexico’s Ministry of Defense to vacate an airfield located by the ocean in Ensenada and move operations to the new airport.
• KEY: “Due to the location, it could easily become an international airport. It would give an added value to the state, strengthen the economy and detonate tourism investment while respecting the winemaking vocation of the area”, said Mario Escobedo, head of tourism in Baja California
• INVESTMENT: If the Mexican military agreed to vacate the 900 airfield in Ensenada -known as El Ciprés-, state authorities say that the property will be used for building hotels, golf courses and parks given its optimal location just south of Ensenada’s downtown.
