• GUN BATTLE: Authorities in the city of León (pop. 1.5 million) confirmed on Tuesday that security forces engaged in a 5 hour-long gun battle with a group of suspects that ended in at least one armed civilian dead and four National Guard members injured.

• WAVE: The largest city in a manufacturing and farming hub in Central Mexico, León, experienced a surge in homicides in 2019 and sits close to an area where two violent gangs are fighting each other: the Jalisco Nueva Generación Cartel and the Santa Rosa de Lima Cartel.

• MONDAY: “At about 1:00 in the morning (on Monday) they report to us that…some National Guard colleagues were injured. We implemented the protocol, we spoke with the captain responsible for the area, and he asked us for support”, said Mario Bravo, State Secretary of Public Safety.

• VIOLENCE: Earlier this week, the Mexican government released data showing that formal murder investigations in the state of Guanajuato, where the city of León is located- reached 2,775 in 2019, the highest for any state across the country.
