Murders in Mexico hit record number in 2019

• RECORDS: Total number of homicides in Mexico hit a new annual record in 2019 with at least 34,582 victims according to new data by government’s public security system (SESNSP). The new figure is higher than the 33,369 murders recorded in 2018.

• STATES: The Mexican states with the largest number of murder complaints during 2019 include the central state of Guanajuato with 2,775, the northwestern state of Baja California with 2,600 and the most populated state: Estado de México with 2,536.

• RATE: However, the Mexican state with the highest murder rate was Colima, the least populated in the country (pop. 711,000), on the Central Pacific Coast. According to the SESNSP data, total number of homicide complaints during 2019 was 779.

• NEW YEAR: “There’s going to be a solution soon. I’m committing myself to this. This past December 1st we finished laying the foundations for the transformation of the country. This year (2020) there will be results on (reducing violence) which is the most hardest issue”, said López Obrador last week.
