• SURVEY: Nearly one third of women in Mexican cities (27.2% of total) said it was victim of harassment or sexual violence in public places during the second half of 2019, according to a new national survey by Mexico’s statistics agency (INEGI).

• PUBLIC SPACES: Included for the first time in INEGI’s public security quarterly survey, statistics surrounding harassment or sexual violence revealed also that 13.6% of adults in Mexico (mostly women) reported being targets of street harassment.

• NORMALIZATION: According to Regina Tamés, head of women’s rights group GIRE, Mexico is experiencing a normalization of violence against women including street harassment and catcalling that can potentially end in fatal violence against women.

• OVERALL: In the same December survey, INEGI reported that the share of Mexican adults who perceived growing public insecurity (72.9%) increased slightly for the first time of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador term in office. Back in September the number was 71.3%.
