• WEAK: Employment in Mexico grew at its weakest pace in 2019 since the Great Depression impacted by a sluggish economy expected to record 0% of GDP growth and with some analysts worried about the impact of an increase to minimum wage.
• NUMBERS: The total number of jobs created in Mexico in 2019 was 342,000 according to data released by the Mexican social security institute (IMSS) a large dip compared to the 660,000 jobs created in 2018 and the weakest figure since a net loss of 171,000 in 2009.
• CONSTRUCTION: Data released shows that the hardest hit sector due to the slowdown of the Mexican economy was the construction sector. Only in December 2019, the number of jobs created fell 0.8% in 2019 when compared to the same month a year earlier.
• INFORMALITY: Regardless of the reported numbers to the national authorities, around 56% of Mexican workers are in informal employment. They are employedboth in the informal economy but also in the country’s private sector and even in some cases in the public sector.
