• PRICE: Known as a signature infrastructure project for the López Obrador Administration, the 950 miles long Mayan Train will have a price tag of USD 6.3 billion according to a cost-benefit analysis released by Mexico’s national tourism trust (FONATUR)
• VALUE: Expecting to have 30 stations, a net present value of USD10.9 billion and a daily passenger demand of 325,000 daily. The Mayan Train’s goal to connect the touristic resort of Cancún to the jungle and archeological sites of southern Mexico.
• HABITS: “The Mayan Train is expected to strengthen connectivity (in the Yucatán and southern Mexico), something that will have an effect on consumption habits in tourists, extending their duration of stay and visiting other destinations on the same trip”, says the government’s document.
• CONCERNS: In December, the UN’s High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) criticized the consultation process of indigenous communities in southern Mexico saying it did not meet all the international standards for a free, prior, informed and culturally appropriate process.
