• PIRACY: The Mexican counterfeit market of electrical equipment -like voltage regulators and uninterruptible power systems (UPS)- grew 5% in 2019 and represents now USD 400 million of total market value, according to estimates by a leading company in the electrical sector.
• MARKET: Labeled by Interpol as one of the most dangerous pirated products in the world, counterfeit electrical devices now amount to 20% of total market in Mexico (worth USD 2 billion) according to estimates by Mexican firm Tecnologías Unidas Complet.
• RISK: “The risk of using (electrical) devices that do not have certifications or do not comply with the regulations and voltage characteristics of Mexico, makes for a very weak protection…and puts risk the operations of a production center”, said Bernardo Fernández, head of Tecnologías Unidas Complet.
• ORIGINS: A joint report by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and the European Union showed that China, Hong Kong and the United Arab Emirates were the economies in the world most likely to export fake electronics and electrical equipment.
