US residents attacked in Tamaulipas, child killed

• ATTACK: A 13-year-old was killed after a family of US permanent residents came under attack Saturday along a stretch of Mexican highway running parallel to the Rio Grande river. Three other family members of were wounded after unknown armed men shot their vehicle.

• FINDINGS: According to authorities in the state of Tamaulipas, the family was returning to their home in Oklahoma after spending the holidays with family in San Luis Potosi. While driving through the border highway near Ciudad Mier and four armed men ordered them to stop.

• COLLISION: “When they did not stop, the (suspects) reached them and collided against (the family vehicle) in order to force them to stop. Then they shot at the victims and fled in another truck”, Tamaulipas public security authorities said in a press release.

• PROHIBITED: The US Department of State has an active alert advising US citizens not to travel to Tamaulipas and to avoid the stretch of highway between the border cities of Reynosa and Nuevo Laredo. According to the US, armed men operate with impunity in the area.
