• LOYALTY: Despite resigning back in October, the former boss of the powerful oil-workers’ union Carlos Romero Deschamps will continue to cast a long shadow over its leadership at least until 2024 when his hand-picked successor will finish his term.
• RECOGNITION: According to a December communication sent by Mexico’s Labor Ministry, the union’s former treasurer Manuel Limón will be allowed complete Romero’s term ending in 2024. For 26 years, Romero was head of the union and Limón was one of his closest aides.
• THE SAME: “This was done as was requested by the boss (Romero). The ones left in the Executive Board are the same. Romero will be governing from the outside, Mr. Limón will consult him on everything and Mr. Romero decides”, said a union official who asked not to be named.
• RESIGNATION: Engulfed by money laundering allegations, Romero Deschamps decided to resigned the leadership’s post in October. A member of the old PRI party, he was leader of around 103,000 unionized workers laboring at Pemex, the state-owned oil company.
