• EXPENSIVE: Mexico’s plan for a new oil-fired power plant in the southern part of the Baja California Peninsula (42MW) would cost significantly higher than other solar and wind power alternatives according to estimates by PMCE, an umbrella group promoting clean energy.
• ALTERNATIVE: “We demonstrated that there is a cheaper, more environmentally sustainable alternative that causes fewer problems for people’s health”, said Rodrigo Palacios an expert at Iniciativa Climática de México (ICM), one of the organizations under the PMCE umbrella.
• COSTS: Mexico’s state-owned utility (CFE) launched a tender for a new heavy fuel oil power plant in La Paz, the capital city of Baja California Sur. PMCE says the plant would cost USD 689 million while wind and solar alternatives would be cheaper (270 million and 258 million, respectively).
• OPPOSITION: “As mayor I am in favor of clean energy for the municipality of La Paz!….We will not accept new CFE internal combustion engine power plants!”, said La Paz mayor Ruben Muñoz. Meanwhile, the Governor of Baja California Sur said he prefers using natural gas.
