• MURDER: A prominent US endodontist was fatally shot in an apparent carjacking on the Mexican side of the border as he was waiting in line to cross into Texas at the international bridge that connects downtown Reynosa in Mexico and the McAllen metro area in the US.

• ROBBERY: Holding dual US-Mexico citizenship and a resident of Mission, Texas according to local government sources, Oscar M. Reséndez was waiting to cross into the US in his SUV when a gunman approached him in an apparent attempt to rob him and asking for the keys to his vehicle.

• WITNESSES: Having crossed the border to visit his father in Reynosa ahead of Christmas Day according family friends, Reséndez died after resisting the robbery; witnesses said that the perpetrator appeared to choose him at random among the other cars in line.

• ADVISORY: For years now, the US Department of State has had an active “Do Not Travel” advisory to Tamaulipas -the Mexican state where Reynosa is located- due to risk of crime and kidnapping. In week past, Reynosa has been seeing a rise in crime reports in its downtown area.
