• GROWTH: The number of foreign residents living in Mexico reached 537,000 in 2019 -more than double the 262,000 estimated back in 2009- with US citizens still representing the largest share of the foreign-born population, according to new data released by Mexico’s migration agency (INM).
• AMERICANS: While the number of foreign residents in Mexico grew during the past decade, the share of US citizens residing in Mexico fell from 22% in 2009 (59,000) to only 14% in 2019 (77,000), according to government estimates.
• PERMANENT: Foreign nationals living in Mexico hold different immigration status under Mexican law that include permanent residency and temporary residency. The number of permanent resident cards issued between January and October was 30,550, a 0.7 reduction from the same period of 2018.
• INCOMPLETE: Released on Sunday by the INM, 2019 data is still incomplete given that it only covers the period between January and October and because it also does not provide estimates for specific foreign groups other than US citizens.
