• THOUSANDS: At least 7,235 Ecuadorians have been denied entry to Mexico in 2019 at different airports around the country prompting a call by the Ecuador’s Government for Mexican authorities to establish transparent criteria to prevent abuses at the ports of entry.

• GOLDEN RULE: “We tell Mexico: don’t do to others what you don’t want done to you”, said Enrique Ponce de León, the Ecuadorian Ambassador to Mexico,  while denouncing “spine-chilling” conditions that his countrymen have faced as they were held in Mexican detention in airports like Monterrey.

• NO VISA: In 2018, Mexico lifted the visa requirement for Ecuadorians (tourism, business, transit). Government data shows that the number of Ecuadorians arriving to Mexico via air increased substantially in 2019 reaching 146,000 by October. The total number in 2018 was 93,000.

• MISTREATMENT: At least 20 people have complained before Ecuadorian consular officials this year of mistreatment by Mexican immigration officers at airports. The Ecuadorian government says that admission criteria applied by Mexico lacks uniformity and often is unpredictable for them.
