• TOP COP: Genaro García Luna, Mexico’s former Public Security Minister and the architect of the war against organized crime under President Felipe Calderón (2006-2012), was arrested Monday in the US for allegedly taking millions of dollars in bribes from the Sinaloa Cartel during his time in office.
• SHOCK: A favorite of US agencies including the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), García Luna had a long law enforcement career in Mexico including as head of Mexico’s Federal Investigation Agency between 2001 and 2006. He had been living in the US since 2012.
• BRIBES: “Garcia Luna stands accused of taking millions of dollars in bribes from (Joaquín) “El Chapo” Guzmán’s Sinaloa Cartel while he controlled Mexico’s Federal Police Force and was responsible for ensuring public safety”, said Richard Donoghue, US Attorney for the Eastern District of New York.
• PORTFOLIOS: The allegations against García Luna are based upon statements made in 2018 by Jesús “El Rey” Zambada (brother of Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada, the other head of the Sinaloa Cartel) saying that in at least two occasions he delivered him portfolios with up to USD 5 million.
