• INDIGNATION: The murder of a young mother, Jacqueline Alba, and her two daughters in the Naucalpan municipality in Estado de México -north of Mexico City- has sparked indignation. The puported killer of the three would have been her own husband who also killed himself, according to family and friends.
• DANGER: Accounting for 10% of all femicides in the country, the central state of Estado de México has long being considered ground zero in the attacks against women with civil society organizations raising the alarm of the high levels of violence against women since at least 2010.
• DATA: Government data shows that at least 809 women have been murdered in México during the current year of 2019. It is most probable final number of femicides (the killing of women because of their gender) will exceed numbers for previous years. At least 891 femicides happened in 2018.
• VIOLENCE: “Jacqueline went to her home with the promise that he was going to give her the girls. That’s when she went back to her house, because she had already left him”, said a relative of the victim who added that her former husband had taken the children away for one week.
