• REJECTION: President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said Mexico rejected the Democrats proposal for US inspectors to supervise the implementation of labor law in Mexican territory during the push to get the new US, Mexico and Canada (USMCA) trade deal ratified by the US Congress.
• BUSINESS: Late on Monday, Mexico’s top business lobby (CCE) had harshly criticized the labor enforcement proposals presented by the US last week saying they were “extreme”; the Mexican private sector also mentioned the idea of stopping goods at the border for labor violations.
• ALTERNATIVE: “We didn’t accept..that there were a kind of (US) inspectors to oversee if a company complies with provisions of the (labor) law…what’s being proposed is that if there is a controversy that there may be a panel, which is different, where we (Mexico) participate jointly”, said López Obrador.
• NEGOTIATION: On Tuesday, Mexico’s trade negotiator Jesús Seade arrived in Washington for talks with US Trade Representative, Robert Lighthizer, surrounding the proposals of changes to the trade agreement signed last year; Mexico already ratified the instrument in June of this year.
